To the Prospective Doctoral Student:

|
We are pleased that you are interested in our Ph.D. program in social work. Our program has a well-established reputation for developing innovative and productive scholars. We currently have about 42 doctoral students at various stages of their education. The first person graduated in 1984; our doctoral alumni now total about 45. Faculty and doctoral students work together in many areas of social work research including aging, child welfare, corrections, health, mental health, social policy, and spiritual diversity. We encourage students to join our program from diverse backgrounds, interests, parts of the country, and regions of the world.
Our doctoral program is distinctive in several ways. It reflects five commitments of the KU School of Social Welfare: to build on individual and collective strengths and resources; to appreciate human diversity; to promote empowerment and social justice; to think creatively and critically; and to develop innovative approaches to practice, theory, research, policy, and education. Our program is designed to help students to critique current thinking and practice in the profession and to develop expertise in their chosen fields so that they can make significant scholarly contributions as scholars, researchers, and teachers. We encourage multiple ways of knowing and advanced research methodologies, including quantitative and qualitative empirical approaches, theoretical and conceptual analyses, and historical studies. There are many opportunities for students to receive financial support through research assistantships, teaching assistantships, fellow awards, and scholarships. Faculty are engaged in numerous projects generating more than 4 million dollars in grants as well as exciting possibilities for students to engage in research, training activities, and publication. Collaborations between faculty and doctoral students provide a great deal of the creative energy here at the KU School of Social Welfare. I hope that you will consider seriously the School of Social Welfare at the University of Kansas as a place to advance your studies. The decision about where to pursue doctoral study has a major impact on one's personal life and scholarly career. I believe that our program, the university, and the surrounding community provide an outstanding environment for both personal and scholarly development.
