ADMISSIONS
In order to be considered for admission, an applicant must meet the following requirements:
- A minimum GPA of 3.50 preferably in the masters program from a Council of Social Work accredited school. In exceptional cases, the Admissions Committee will consider non-MSW applicants who, through their professional activity have been closely identified with the profession, its practice, and its ethical stance. We also consider international applicants with master's degrees in social work or closely aligned fields.
- Completion of the Graduate Record Examination within the past five years.
- Basic statistical competency as demonstrated by completion at a B or better level of a basic statistics course at the undergraduate or graduate level completed within the past five years.
- Three years social work related practice experience, with preference given to three years post-masters professional social work experience.
- Demonstrated ability for doctoral study in social work. Ability is demonstrated through a written statement of research interest in a social work issue, through letters of recommendation, and through a record of scholarly and professional achievement.
BASES FOR EVALUATION
The dimensions used by the committee in judging applications are the following:
- Applicant's potential for excellence in academic performance.
- Professional practice experience.
- Research potential.
The sources of data by which to judge these dimensions will be:
- Undergraduate and graduate transcripts of prior academic work.
- Publications, presentations, research proposals and scholarly works (optional).
- References concerning professional practice and other professional and academic work.
- Statement of research and scholarly interests.
- Information about the applicant's experience in professional practice.
- GRE scores.
- For International students, English language proficiency as determined by TOEFL scores and consultation with KU Applied English Center.
DEFINITION OF PRACTICE REQUIREMENT
Practice will be considered the equivalent of three years full-time employment as a practitioner and/or as an educator in social work/social welfare related fields. Preferential consideration is given to employment as a social work practitioner in which there is direct client contact or contact on behalf of clients.
APPLICATION PROCEDURES
The following documents must accompany the application to the Doctoral Program:
- Completed Application for Admission to Graduate School (press firmly if printing).
- Completed Supplemental Application Form.
- Copy of samples of scholarly work, if any, such as journal articles, conference papers delivered and research reports.
- Statement identifying statistics course: Title, date of completion, grade as it appears on transcript. Completion of a basic statistics course within the past five years is required prior to your first semester work. If you have not yet completed such a course, please indicate your plan for doing so.
- Statement of current scholarly and research interests related to innovation in the social work profession. (See enclosed "Statement of Scholarly and Research Interests).
- Vita or resume.
- $30 application fee payable via secure server.

In order to complete the application procedure; please arrange to have the following sent directly to Doctoral Office, School of Social Welfare, University of Kansas, 1545 Lilac Lane, Lawrence, KS 66044-3184:
- Two official copies of all undergraduate and graduate academic transcripts.
For International applicants, if native language is not English, please provide official, original language copies of your academic records with certified English translation. Two copies of each are still required.
- Official GRE scores.
- The School's letter of reference release forms must accompany letters of reference.
- If International applicant, official TOEFL scores (must have been completed within past 2 years). It is also necessary to be familiar with procedures and policies of the International Student Services and the Applied English Center .
