Thank you for your inquiry about our graduate program in Medicinal Chemistry. Currently, our Department consists of a faculty of 10 professors, approximately 36 graduate students, 30 postdoctoral associates and an outstanding technical staff. The research program in Medicinal Chemistry encompasses and integrates many areas of organic chemistry, biochemistry, pharmacology, and toxicology as described in the enclosed information. Our department is committed to providing a first rate graduate education, a stimulating research environment and assistance in all aspects of the professional development of our students.
A baccalaureate degree in chemistry, biochemistry, or pharmacy ordinarily provides an adequate background for entry to the graduate program in Medicinal Chemistry. Ideally, this will have included undergraduate courses in mammalian physiology, biochemistry, and physical chemistry, but if not, these deficiencies can easily be corrected during the first year of graduate training. Students admitted to our program obtain financial support as research assistants; all applicants are automatically considered for these awards. The anticipated stipend for assistantships in 2004 is $17,000 per year. In addition, full-time tuition will ordinarily be provided to students in good standing. However, for very talented students, special prestigious fellowships that carry higher stipends are available on a competitive basis. These include awards from the Department, the Graduate School, and the Self Graduate Fellowship Program of the University of Kansas (see enclosure). If you feel you would be qualified for these special awards, your application and supporting documentation must be received by December 15, 2003. As of this year, all applications for admission to the graduate program are processed through the Graduate School, and all materials (transcripts, letters of reference, GRE scores and fee) should be sent to The Graduate Application Processing Center (GAPC) in 30 Strong Hall. Applications can be Submitted online (http://www.graduate.ku.edu/Students/Prospects/, application fee $45.00) or a paper copy of the application form can be submitted to the above address (application fee $55.00). The application fee cannot be waived. To apply you should submit two official transcripts of all previous college or university studies and three letters of recommendation from former professors or employers to the above address. Our department also requires that applicants submit Graduate Record Exam scores as part of their application. In addition, we strongly encourage applicants to take the GRE subject exam in Chemistry. These scores are very helpful in the evaluation process, and preference is given to applicants with strong subject test scores. No additional forms are needed to apply for financial support.
