Checklist

Please note that:

  • All materials must be filled out completely.
  • All application materials must be completed in English.
  • You should keep a copy of all application materials. (You may print a copy of your application after it is submitted by clicking on "view/print" in your Personal Log.)
  • All mailed parts of the application must be original hard copies. MIT does not accept faxed application materials.
  • If you are applying to more than one department (not a joint program) you must submit separate applications and fees for each department.

  1. Review application forms, instructions, and background information
We recommend that you read all materials provided on this site carefully before you begin work on your application.
  2. Take required tests
See the test requirements for each department to which you are applying.
  3. Obtain a transcript
Request an official transcript from the registrar of each undergraduate and graduate college or university you attended and submit it in its sealed envelope with all other paper application materials. The transcript should contain your college record to date, with a statement of your rank in your class and in your department, if available. If your latest grades do not appear on your transcript, ask the registrar to include a list of the classes for which you are currently registered. Applicants who have attended universities outside the U.S. that do not issue transcripts should submit certified or attested copies of all grade reports, examination results, and diplomas. MIT undergraduates would submit their latest grade reports rather than their transcripts.
  4. Distribute and collect evaluators' forms
Ask three professors (or two professors and one supervisor, if you are employed) who know you well to write evaluations on your behalf. Check the listing of the department to which you are applying for any special evaluator requirements. The evaluation form can be filled out and submitted online. You will be asked to enter contact information for your three evaluators. Email will be sent automatically to your evaluators with a link to the online evaluation form. If an evaluator prefers to use the paper form, please ask him/her to send it in a sealed envelope and mail it directly to the department to which your are applying.
  5. Complete and assemble all parts of the application
    A complete application includes:
    • Application for Graduate Admission including Record of Courses (if required)
    • Statement of Objectives
    • Evaluations (3 forms)
    • Financial Statement
    • Official Transcripts (one for each undergraduate and graduate institution attended)
    • Scores from required tests (to be sent directly by testing organization)

Any supplemental materials should be sent, under separate cover, to the department to which you are applying.

  6. Pay application fee
Application to MIT requires a nonrefundable fee of $70 in U.S. funds. The online application will not submit without an online payment of the application fee. You may pay by credit card (American Express, Discover, Mastercard, Visa) or by electronic check (U.S. banks only).
  7. Submit application
To submit your online application, go to the final page and click the button labeled "Submit and pay." Then follow the prompts for online payment of the application fee. After a successful payment is made, your application will be submitted to MIT Admissions.
