APPLICATION FOR FRESHMAN ADMISSION

We are pleased that you are considering Susquehanna University. Please take a few minutes to read through the instructions which follow. They have been written to assist you in completing the application and in understanding the admission and financial aid processes.

The Application For Admission
Please read each question carefully and answer it completely. Do not overlook the Personal Essay.

Deadlines and Notification
You are encouraged to apply as early as possible during your senior year and to remember that deadlines are important. You may choose either option outlined below.

Early Decision:
If you have selected Susquehanna as your first choice, you should consider the advantages of Early Decision. The deadline for Early Decision I is November 15, 2003 with notification on or before January 15. The deadline for Early Decision II is January 1, 2004. If you are accepted under Early Decision you are guaranteed first consideration for on-campus housing, scholarships and financial aid. (Please refer to the section on financial aid.) You have the option of applying to other colleges as a regular decision candidate. If you are admitted Early Decision to Susquehanna, you are obligated to enroll at the University and to withdraw all other applications you may have submitted.

Regular Decision:
The preferred deadline for Regular Decision is March 1, 2004. Notification begins on January 15 and continues on a rolling basis as applications become complete.

Secondary School Report/Transcript Request Form
After completing the top section, give the form to your high school guidance counselor. He or she will complete it and mail it, along with a transcript of your courses and grades, directly to the Admissions Office.

Mid-Year Grade Report
After completing the top section, give the form to your high school guidance counselor. He or she should send your mid-year grades as soon as they are available.

Teacher Evaluation
A letter of recommendation from a teacher in an academic subject taken during your junior or senior year is required. An evaluation form is included. You are advised to provide a stamped envelope addressed to the Admissions Office, Susquehanna University, for the convenience of your teacher.

Standardized Tests
You must take either the Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT-1) or the American College Test (ACT) by January of your senior year. You are also encouraged to submit results of SAT-II; Subject Tests including the writing test. Please have all test results sent directly to the University by the testing services.

If English is not your first language, the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) is required and may substitute for the SAT-1 or ACT. If you have been in the US for a few years, you may submit an English Language Proficiency Test (ELPT) result.

Write Option: An SAT/ACT Alternative
If you have pursued a rigorous academic program and have achieved a cumulative class rank in the top 20 percent of your high school class, you may submit two graded writing samples instead of standardized test scores. Contact the Admissions Office for more detailed information about The Write Option or check the appropriate box on the application.

Early Action Legacy Plan
If your parent or grandparent is a Susquehanna graduate, you are eligible for the Early Action Legacy Plan. By submitting a complete application, including transcript and supporting documents by November 15, you will receive an admissions decision by December 15. This is a non-binding option that offers you first consideration for on-campus housing and scholarships, including an Alumni Scholarship. Please check the appropriate box on the application if you would like to be considered as an Early Action Legacy Plan applicant.

Audition tapes are welcome as supplementary material, but cannot take the place of a live audition. Students submitting tapes must also send a return mail envelope with correct postage if return of the tape is desired.

Note: All students seeking admission to the Department of Music are asked to submit an application for admission to the Admissions Office prior to auditioning.

Education Majors
In order to be accepted for student teaching placements, education majors are required to meet special grade requirements. For more information, please contact Susquehanna's Education Department at 570-372-4158.

Writing Concentration Majors
All students seeking admission to the writing concentration major must submit a writing portfolio when applying for admission. The portfolio can be a short story, a personal message, a selection of poems, a script, or a combination of these. The writing should be double-spaced and have a length of ten to twelve pages. The Honors Program
Exceptionally well-qualified students may be selected for the University Honors Program. The Program is designed to offer approximately 50 outstanding students a more independent and interdisciplinary approach to learning. Admission is highly competitive. In early April, students offered admission to the program will be invited to campus to meet the Honors Program faculty and to learn more about the opportunities available through the Program. If you are interested in being considered for admission to the Honors Program, please check the appropriate box on the application.

Application Evaluation
We hope you will be complete and candid in answering the questions asked of you in this application. Admission is competitive; thus, we want the Admissions Committee to be as well informed as possible. Your academic potential is important, as is your ability to contribute talent and diversity to the student body. Most important is the quality of your academic preparation because it is the best predictor of academic success at Susquehanna. Your SAT-1 and/or ACT scores, comments from teachers and guidance counselors, extracurricular activities, creative talent, and demonstrated interest in the University are also important factors.

Scholarships
Susquehanna has established a scholarship program to recognize outstanding academic achievement, personal accomplishment, and/or musical talent of admitted students to Susquehanna, regardless of their demonstrated financial need. Academic and music scholarships are awarded on a competitive basis and are renewable annually. Students are automatically considered for the one scholarship which best rewards their academic and/or music accomplishments. There is no separate scholarship application. However, auditions are required for music scholarship consideration.

Need-Based Financial Aid
To apply for financial aid from state, federal, and University sources, you and your family must complete and submit financial aid applications in addition to your application for admission. All financial aid applicants must:
  1. complete the College Scholarship Service PROFILE form
  2. complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)
  3. submit photocopies of most recent federal tax returns
You must complete a registration form for the PROFILE in order to receive your customized application form. Both the registration form for the PROFILE and the FAFSA form will be available in the fall. (Residents of Ohio, Vermont, and Washington, D.C. must also complete their individual state's grant application.) Early Decision candidates should file the PROFILE as early in the fall as possible. For priority consideration, Regular Decision candidates should file all forms by March 1, keeping in mind that the first date to file the FAFSA is January 1.

For Regular Decision applicants who have been admitted to the University and who have filed all required forms, financial aid decisions will be released beginning February 1.

If you have questions about the financial aid or scholarship program, please contact the Financial Aid Office at 570-372-4450 or 1-800-326-9672.

Act 101
The Act 101 program offers extra tutorial and support services to Pennsylvania residents who meet certain income guidelines. An applicant whose academic record may have been affected by cultural, economic, and educational disadvantages may request consideration as an Act 101 candidate.

Alumni/Parent Admissions Network
The Alumni/Parent Admissions Network (APAN) is an organization of Susquehanna alumni and parents of current students who serve prospective students and their families by helping them gain a better understanding of the opportunities at the University. If you would like to be put in touch with an APAN volunteer in your area, please call our office and ask for the APAN coordinator (1-800-326-9672).

One final word….
Selecting the right college is one of the most important decisions you will make. The process of applying and selecting should be neither complicated nor bewildering. If you read carefully, follow instructions thoroughly, and meet deadlines promptly, it will not be. If you need help, please ask for it - from your guidance counselor or from us. Once you have completed the application, take time to review it, and then send it to us. We look forward to learning more about you and to assisting you in your college planning. Best wishes for a successful year.
