ADMISSIONS

Hartwick seeks to admit those students who have demonstrated promise and, through past achievements, their desire to develop intellectually and personally.

A prospective student’s curriculum and academic performance in secondary school are the primary criteria in the selection process.

The distribution of recommended secondary school courses for applicants includes:

  1. four years of English
  2. three years of a modern or classical foreign language
  3. three years of mathematics
  4. two years of a laboratory science plus one additional science
  5. two years of history
  6. two years of social science

The College will recognize those students who have taken advanced work in these areas and will note the variety and substance of other courses supplemental to the basic core, most notably in the fine arts.

MUSIC AUDITIONS

If you are planning to pursue music as a major field of study, you are required to have an audition. Auditions are held periodically throughout the academic year both on and off campus. To make arrangements you should contact the chair of the music department at 607-431-4808.

ART PORTFOLIO REVIEWS

The faculty of the department of art and art history must review the portfolio of prospective majors prior to acceptance into the major. Entering students may submit a slide portfolio consisting of 10-20 slides of their work. Notification of acceptance into the major or suggestions for further work prior to acceptance into the major will be sent directly from the department. In either case, admission is based on a total review of applicant qualifications, not the portfolio alone. Students pursuing a major in art are eligible to apply for the Foreman Art Scholarship; please request the application from the Admissions Office.
