APPLICATION PROCEDURE

We are pleased that you expressed an interest in Grinnell.
Applying to college should not be intimidating. The instructions provided here will help simplify the process. Our application is designed so that we learn about you without requiring you to provide us with every last detail about your life. We prefer to discover your interests and talents. We think this application provides you the freedom to tell us. If you have any suggestions on how we can improve the application, please feel free to offer them.
Applying to college is an opportunity for self-reflection. The best advice we can give is to just be yourself. Grinnell is a college that respects and encourages individuality, so we wouldn’t want you to present yourself otherwise. Best wishes with all your college applications. We look forward to learning more about you.

APPLICATION OPTIONS
Early Decision - I or II is available only to first-year students who decide that Grinnell is clearly their first choice. Early Decision is a commitment to enroll, and those accepted must withdraw applications to other colleges. Students may not apply to more than one institution as an Early Decision candidate. International students wishing to apply Early Decision must contact the Office of Admission prior to submitting their applications.

Regular Decision - First-year Admission - Secondary-school seniors should submit the application and supporting documents by January 20, 2003. Grinnell will notify these applicants about admission on April 1. Admitted students will have until May 1, the commonly recognized reply date for colleges, to accept admission to Grinnell.

Early Admission - is offered to secondary-school juniors who exhibit unusual maturity and superior academic credentials. An interview is required for Early Admission candidates. Early Admission candidates are not eligible to apply under the Early Decision plan.

Transfer Admission -International transfer students are accepted for the first semester only, which begins in August 2003. Application deadline is January 20, 2003.

International Admission -If you do not hold a U.S. passport or U.S. Permanent Residency, you will be required to apply to Grinnell College using the International Application for Admission. All international students, first-year and transfer, must apply by January 20. Experience tells us that applicants who submit their documents by December are more likely to complete their applications on time. For this reason, we strongly encourage you to submit your application as soon as possible. The TOEFL is required for all international students for whom English is not their first language. Exceptions will be made on a case by case basis (contact the Office of Admission for more information).

Deferred Admission - Some admitted applicants may decide that they wish to take a year off before entering college. Applicants who wish to defer are required to submit a short statement, to the Office of Admission, confirming this decision and explaining what their plans are for the next year. Admitted applicants may defer for one year. Their place is reserved by submitting the tuition and housing deposit by May 1.

Testing - All applicants must submit the results of either the SAT I (Scholastic Assessment Test) or the ACT (American College Test) by arranging for the centers to send scores to Grinnell by the application deadline date. Due to the limited availability of these exams in China, students living in the P.R.C. are exempt from this requirement. SAT II results are optional. Applicants for whom English is not the primary language should take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) and send an official score report to the Office of Admission. Grinnell's college code is 1318 for ACT and 6252 for SAT and TOEFL.

Other Options - We offer the Grinnell College application online which is available through Grinnell's website: http://www.grinnell.edu/admission/apply/

We also accept the Common Application, which is available in high schools and on the Common Application website: www.commonapp.org. International students and/or students attending school abroad, who apply to Grinnell using the Common Application, will also be required to submit the Common Application Supplement Form and the Educational Background Summary Form. These two forms are available in the application section of Grinnell's website. If you do not have an electronic mail address, these forms will be mailed to you separately. The deadlines for the Common Application are the same as Grinnell's own application. If you have applied using the Common Application and wish to be considered for financial aid and/or scholarships, please see the "Financial Aid Application Procedure" section of this form.

Interview - An interview is strongly recommended but not required. We encourage you to visit the campus for an interview. On-campus interviews are offered for seniors and international transfer students through January 20, 2003. If you cannot visit campus, you may be able to make arrangements for an interview with a Grinnell alumni admission volunteer in your area by calling the Office of Admission. Alumni interviews can be requested through January 3, 2003.

FINANCIAL AID APPLICATION PROCEDURE
There are three types of financial aid for international students:

1) Half-tuition Grants: Admitted international students who demonstrate need are eligible for financial assistance that will cover up to one-half the cost of tuition. This is the maximum amount awarded to any international applicant if they do not qualify for one of the following scholarships.

2) International Merit Scholarships: These highly competitive scholarships are awarded to only a few students each year who demonstrate high academic achievements, a wide array of extra curricular activities and leadership potential. A merit scholarship, in combination with the half-tuition grant, can potentially cover the full cost of tuition. A merit scholarship will only be considered for admitted students who can demonstrate, at the time of application, the ability to cover the costs of room, board, fees and miscellaneous costs (roughly $11,000).

3) Special Scholarships: Grinnell offers a limited number of scholarships that meet the full demonstrated need. These are extremely competitive scholarships. For more information about these scholarships, please refer to the International Student Financial Aid Policy brochure.

All applicants applying for financial aid must complete the International Student Application for Financial Aid. There are no additional forms required to compete for any of the three categories of financial aid listed above.

Note: The AFA and FAFSA forms referred to in the other Grinnell publications do not apply to international students.
