APPLICATION PROCEDURE

We are pleased that you expressed an interest in Grinnell.
Applying to college should not be intimidating. The instructions provided here will help simplify the process. Our application is designed so that we learn about you without requiring you to provide us with every last detail about your life. We prefer to discover your interests and talents. We think this application provides you the freedom to tell us. If you have any suggestions on how we can improve the application, please feel free to offer them.
Applying to college is an opportunity for self-reflection. The best advice we can give is to just be yourself. Grinnell is a college that respects and encourages individuality, so we wouldn’t want you to present yourself otherwise.
Best wishes with all your college applications. We look forward to learning more about you.

APPLICATION OPTIONS
Early Decision - I or II is available only to first-year students who decide that Grinnell is clearly their first choice. Early Decision is a commitment to enroll, and those accepted must withdraw applications to other colleges. Students may not apply to more than one institution as an Early Decision candidate.

Regular Decision - First-year Admission - Secondary-school seniors should submit the application and supporting documents by January 20, 2003. Grinnell will notify these applicants about admission on April 1. Admitted students will have until May 1, the commonly recognized reply date for colleges, to accept admission to Grinnell.

Early Admission is offered to secondary-school juniors who exhibit unusual maturity and superior academic credentials. An interview is required for Early Admission candidates. Early Admission candidates are not eligible to apply under the Early Decision plan.

Deferred Admission - Some admitted applicants may decide that they wish to take a year off before entering college. Applicants who wish to defer are required to submit a short statement, to the Office of Admission, confirming this decision and explaining what their plans are for the next year. Admitted applicants may defer for one year. Their place is reserved by submitting the tuition and housing deposit by May 1.

Testing - All applicants must submit the results of either the SAT I (Scholastic Assessment Test) or the ACT (American College Test) by arranging for the centers to send scores to Grinnell by the application deadline date. Due to the inavailability of these exams in China, students living in the P.R.C. are exempt from this requirement. SAT II results are optional. Applicants for whom English is not the primary language should take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) and send an official score report to the Office of Admission. Grinnell's college code is 1318 for ACT and 6252 for SAT.

Other Options - We offer the Grinnell College application online and we accept the Common Application, which is available in high schools and online. Both online options are available through the College website: http://www.grinnell.edu/admission/apply/
Students who apply to Grinnell using the Common Application will also be required to submit the Common Application Supplement Form. This supplement can be found at the "applying" section of Grinnell's website, and is also available on the Common Application website: www.commonapp.org
Students who do not provide e-mail addresses will be sent the supplement in the mail within two weeks of receipt of the Common Application. The deadlines for the Common Application are the same as Grinnell's own application. If you have applied using the Common Application and wish to be considered for financial aid or scholarship, you will need to submit the Grinnell College Application for Financial Aid and Scholarships (AFA), found on our website, by the appropriate deadline.

Interview - An interview is strongly recommended but not required. We encourage you to visit the campus for an interview. On-campus interviews are offered for seniors through January 20, 2003. If you cannot visit campus, you may be able to make arrangements for an interview with a Grinnell alumni admission volunteer in your area by calling the Office of Admission. Alumni interviews are offered to seniors through January 3, 2003.

FINANCIAL AID APPLICATION PROCEDURE
The first step in applying for merit scholarships and financial assistance at Grinnell is completing the Grinnell College Application for Financial Aid and Scholarships (AFA). The AFA, which is included in the admission application packet, must be mailed by the required deadline as indicated above.
The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) must also be filed with the processor by our February 1 deadline. This form is available at high schools and colleges beginning in November. Students are expected to apply for any state and/or federal assistance programs for which they may qualify.
Grinnell encourages all families to complete the FAFSA as soon after January 1 as possible. Please be sure to complete all sections of the FAFSA and include Grinnell College in the Release and Certification section. Our Title IV code is 001868. Families may estimate their 2002 tax information, if necessary, to meet our February 1 deadline for primary consideration of all types of assistance. Because it may take the processing center up to four weeks to process your application, filing early helps the application process go more smoothly. Filing after the February 1 deadline may jeopardize your chances of being considered for aid.
