In addition to meeting the academic requirements, applicants whose primary
language is not English must write a proficiency test regardless of
citizenship. Exceptions are students who have completed both Secondary V
and the Diploma of Collegial Studies (DEC) in Québec, or who have studied
for at least three years in an educational institution where the sole
language of instruction is English.In all cases, the University reserves
the right to require a proficiency test if it is deemed necessary. Other
candidates are required to present proof of proficiency in English by
achieving appropriate standing on one of the following:
Montréal Area Applicants
Concordia English Language Diagnostic Test (CELDT)
- Persons applying from within the Montréal area who are required to
write an English language test will automatically be scheduled to sit the
Concordia English Language Diagnostic Test upon making application to the
University.
- An application will not be considered complete until these test
results have been received.
Concordia University Continuing Education Language Institute Students (CELI)
- Students who successfully complete the Advanced 2 level of the
Intensive English as a Second Language (ESL) program at CELI with a final
grade of 70% will automatically meet the English language proficiency
requirements for admission.
- All other CELI students will be scheduled to sit the CELDT upon
making application to the University.
Other Applicants
- Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)
TOEFL: Test scores of 550* on the paper-based test and 213* on the
computer-based test are required.
The Educational Testing Service administers TOEFL in approximately 200
cities worldwide several times a year.

- University of Michigan English Language Assessment Battery
(MELAB)
Michigan score normally required: 85*
Candidates who wish to take this test should write directly to the

- International English Language Testing System (IELTS)
IELTS score normally required: 6.5

*Academically superior students with TOEFL test scores between 500 and 550
on the paper-based test or 173 and 213 on the computer-based test, or
Michigan test scores between 80 and 85 may be considered for admission, but
will be required to take courses in English as a Second Language.
Test Results
An application will not be considered before the test results have been
received. You should therefore contact the TOEFL, University of Michigan or
IELTS test centre as soon as possible in order that the date of receipt of test
results does not delay or prevent consideration of your application.
Your test results must be reported directly to the Office of the Registrar
by the test centre. Candidates’ copies of results, or results that are more
than two years old at point of review will not be acceptable as proof of
language proficiency.
