Instructions and Checklist for International Applicants

Please follow these instructions carefully. Incomplete or inaccurate information will result in delays in the application process or denial of admission.

1. Complete the Carson-Newman College Application for Admission (Note: The application fee for international students is $50.00). The application fee must be paid online for successful submission of the online application.

2. Complete the Confirmation of Financial Support form. Be sure to provide all required supporting documents.

3. Submit official transcripts of all secondary and university work. These must be originals (not photocopies). If the transcripts are not in English, a certified English translation must be provided. Certified results of any national examinations (GCE, ICSE, etc.) or standard examination for entry into higher education in your country may be helpful in facilitating the admission process and should be submitted. All university level studies must also be evaluated for advanced standing by a professional credentials evaluation service (see list of approved agencies.)

4. A TOEFL, SAT or ACT score. Students whose native language is English or who plan to participate in varsity sports must submit an SAT or ACT score. These scores should be sent directly from the testing agency. Our institutional code for the SAT and the TOEFL is 1102, and for the ACT it is 3950. (ELI applicants are exempt from this requirement.)

5. Students desiring to apply for an Athletic scholarship should provide a letter of interest addressed to the Athletic Director, with supporting evidence of athletic ability such as a recommendation from a coach, a video, etc. Students desiring to apply for a Music Performance scholarship should likewise provide a letter of interest addressed to the Chair of the Music Department, with supporting evidence of music performance abilities such as a video or audio recording, previous awards, etc. Academic scholarships will be awarded based upon SAT or ACT score, high school GPA, class rank, etc. There are also a limited number of on-campus work-study positions.

Deadlines for submitting applications: You may apply to Carson-Newman at any time after completing your junior year of secondary school (grade 11). However, it is recommended that applicants complete all of the above steps by June 1 for admission for the fall semester and by November 1 for the spring semester. Later applicants may not be eligible for financial aid, may not get the residence hall assignment that they prefer, and may receive their I-20 too late to apply for their visa.
