![]() Founded some 150 years ago, Carson-Newman College has a long and proud tradition of providing a high quality liberal arts education at an affordable price. U. S. News and World Report has recognized Carson-Newman as one of the top ten southern liberal arts colleges for its quality in teaching, its educational value, and its overall academic quality. It is the only institution in the entire state of Tennessee to be ranked so highly in all three of these areas. The Templeton Foundation has repeatedly recognized Carson-Newman as a character-building college for the quality of its graduates. A private college, Carson-Newman is self-governing, through its board of trustees. It offers both its faculty and its students the academic freedom to explore the broadest range of ideas and to employ innovative techniques and technologies in its classrooms and laboratories. Carson-Newman is Christian in identity and tradition, but affirms religious freedom in practice and expression for all persons. Purposefully small in size, Carson-Newman's academic community offers the challenges, opportunities and facilities of a select university within a flexible and comfortable college atmosphere. With some 2,100 undergraduate and 250 graduate students, the student to faculty ratio is only 13 to 1. Every student receives the personal attention needed to assure the best academic achievement possible. Almost three-quarters of Carson-Newman's full-time faculty members hold earned doctorates. The rest are highly-qualified professionals who have achieved outstanding performance in their fields of specialization. The part-time faculty members are likewise well qualified and are, for the most part, actively engaged in the fields in which they teach. Campus Facilities Among the many excellent facilities, the Maddox Student Activities Center is the hub of campus life. The 96,000 square foot facility was named one of the top 10 recreational facilities in America by Architectural Digest. It includes an indoor Olympic-size pool, multiple gymnasiums, a running track, racquetball courts, fully equipped exercise rooms, a game room, a TV lounge, the campus post office, a bookstore, a snack-bar, study rooms, and more. The Academic Computer Center houses several computer labs with multiple formats and a state-of-the-art network server connecting all dormitory rooms, faculty offices, the library, and classroom buildings to each other and to the internet through a high-speed T-1 line. Both physical and emotional health services and counseling are offered through the Kathleen Manley Center for Wellness. Academic success and career seminars, advising, and tutoring services are provided by the Academic Support Center. Music recital halls, art galleries, theaters, a television studio, and well-equipped science labs also contribute to Carson-Newman's ability to offer its students the best of learning opportunities in the best environment. Special Services to International Students The Center for International Education and Missions directs all activities and non-academic programs for international students. The following are some of the many services provided by the Center:
Carson-Newman's 95 acre campus is located in Jefferson City, Tennessee, in the southeastern part of the United States. It is only about 30 minutes east of the large city of Knoxville and about 45 minutes from the popular Great Smokey Mountains National Park, the most visited national park in all of the United States. One of Americas most well known high-tech science centers and home of the Oak Ridge National Laboratories and its supporting industries, is also quite near. Admissions and Financial Aid Carson-Newman welcomes applications from qualified international students who seek a quality education in any of its undergraduate or graduate programs, and/or wish to improve their English proficiency in its English Language Institute. The Office of Admissions works with each applicant closely and endeavors to make the admissions process as simple and smooth as possible. Financial aid is available to international undergraduate students in the form of merit-based scholarships. There are also a number of on-campus work-study positions available. This financial aid is renewable for the duration of the program if the level of academic, athletic, or performance merit is maintained. |
