$50 Application Fee

There is a non-refundable application fee of $50, which is payable online through secure servers with Master Card, VISA or electronic check drafted from a U.S. checking account.

Reference Forms

You will need to print three copies of the Reference Form (available here) to give to your references. The reference forms need to be mailed from the respondent to you for submission with your supplemental materials. Provide each respondent with the Reference Form and a stamped envelope addressed to you. They are required to seal the envelope and affix their signature over the seal. Do not open the envelope or break the seal.

In most academic departments, references from faculty members are preferred; applicants with substantial work experience may request professional references.

In Teacher Education references addressing work experience, whether paid or unpaid, with children and/or youth are also desirable.

In the Management and Executive Management departments, professional references are equally desirable. For certificate applicants, references are recommended but not required. For Ph.D. applicants, references should also address intellectual pursuits.

Standardized Tests

Please request official scores to be sent directly from the testing agencies to Claremont Graduate University Admissions Office. Our institution code is 4053. GRE and GMAT scores may not be more than five years old at the time of application. TOEFL and IELTS scores may not be more than two years old.

GRE and GMAT

School for the Humanities, School of Politics and Economics, Botany, Education, Mathematics, Music, Psychology, and Applied Women's Studies. Applicants who hold a degree from the U.S. or who are from a native English speaking country must submit scores for the general section of the GRE.

Psychology. The GRE subject section is recommended but not required.

Human Resources Design and Information Science. Applicants may submit scores for either the GMAT or the GRE.

Economics. Applicants may submit scores for either the GRE or GMAT. The GRE subject section is recommended but not required.

Management, Executive Management. Applicants must submit scores for the GMAT. The GMAT is not required for applicants to the certificate or M.A. programs.

TOEFL and IELTS

Applicants whose native language is not English and who do not hold a degree from a U.S. college or university, or who are from an English speaking country, must submit TOEFL or IELTS scores.

CBEST and PRAXIS

The CBEST is required for applicants in Teacher Education.

Elementary Credential. Applicants must submit scores for the PRAXIS/MSAT or a waiver letter. Secondary Credential. Applicants must submit scores for the PRAXIS/SSAT specialty tests or a waiver letter.

Official Transcripts

Have each undergraduate and graduate institution you have attended send an official transcript directly to you. Unofficial or student copies are not acceptable. If degree requirements have not yet been met, request an interim transcript citing all work completed to date. A final transcript stating the date the degree was conferred must be submitted upon degree conferral. Transcripts which are not in English must be accompanied by an official English translation. International students please include any English language studies. Executive Management certificate applicants are not required to submit transcripts.

Resume

Please submit a current resume listing at minimum your last three employers and nature of your work. Also include awards received, association memberships, and computer literacy.

Management. Include professional experience and full- or part-time work, accounting for all time periods since high school and including details about compensation and the nature and extent of responsibilities.

Executive Management. Resume should include description of duties and responsibilities, reflecting mid- to senior-level management experience, including number of direct reports, current salary and nature of business.

Personal Statement

The personal statement is an important part of your application. It is your opportunity to provide information about your background, interests, and aspirations, and how they relate to your proposed academic program. In your statement, describe your reasons for pursuing graduate study, the program you hope to follow at CGU, and the strengths and weaknesses of your preparation for graduate study. All personal statements should be double-spaced and typed.

School of Humanities, School of Politics and Economics, School of Behavioral and Organizational Sciences, Botany, Mathematics, Information Science and Applied Women's Studies: 2-3 page statement.

Music: Include details of special training, travel, exhibits or performances of particular note.

Psychology and Human Resources Design: Include descriptions of relevant research and work experience in applied settings.

Education: Write a 5 page statement and include the problems, issues, and other research questions you wish to study.

Teacher Education: Write a 6 page statement and include your previous experience working with children and/or youth, and matters of concern to you in regard to improving education.

Management and Financial Engineering: Write a 3-6 page statement and include your professional experience. Also describe a challenging situation or dilemma (e.g., managerial, ethical, technical) explaining how you addressed it and the outcome. For Ph.D in Management, applicants should also provide a detailed discussion of their area of interest.

Executive Management: No standard length, include short- and long-term career goals, the unique combination of intellectual and managerial strengths you bring to the department and how education will benefit you.

Department Specific Requirements

Art. Submit a portfolio of representative work for evaluation consisting of 15 clearly labeled slides with dots on lower left corners, in a slide sheet with a slide inventory list. Performance applicants must submit a clearly labeled 2-3 minute video tape (VHS) indicative of work, a portion of works, and/or details of works. All slide and video portfolios must include a self-addressed, stamped envelope for return. Portfolios should be submitted directly to the Art Department, Claremont Graduate University, 251 E. Tenth Street, Claremont, CA 91711.

Teacher Education, Professional Administrative Services Credential, Executive Management. Applicants will be contacted for a personal interview.

Management. Submit a brief statement of how you have met or plan to meet the prerequisites prior to enrollment. See MBA brochure for details or call 1-800-944-4312.

Music. Applicants with a concentration in performance must audition. Taped recordings may be accepted in place of a personal appearance in cases of hardship. Applicants with a concentration in composition must submit representative samples of their work. Applicants with a concentration in education or history must submit published articles, unpublished term papers, or other examples of their work.

Religion. Provide a list of relevant upper-division undergraduate and/or graduate religion courses taken, including institution, term/year, grade, and a brief content description. Also include a list of ancient and modern languages studied, and the reading, writing, and speaking proficiency in each, if this is not already included on the on-line application.
