APPLICATION OPTIONS FOR FIRST-YEAR UNDERGRADUATES
Butler offers two non-binding, early admissions programs. These programs allow students to take advantage of certain benefits by following established timelines. Completed applications for fall semester enrollment will be reviewed beginning Oct. 1. Decisions are made on a rolling basis. International applicants who take the SAT or ACT examination and submit their application by the deadlines outlined below are eligible for Freshman Academic and Departmental Scholarship consideration.
The enrollment deposit is refundable through May 1 for fall enrollment and through Dec. 1 for spring enrollment. Refund requests should be made in writing and postmarked by the appropriate date.
EARLY ADMISSION I
Priority Dates
EARLY ADMISSION II
Priority Dates
Butler University adheres to the National Candidates Reply Date of May 1. Enrollment deposits paid prior to that date are refundable until May 1 for Fall Enrollment (and until Dec. 1 for Spring Enrollment). Refund requests should be made in writing and postmarked by the appropriate date.
DEPARTMENTAL SCHOLARSHIP
Many academic departments offer awards for students intending
to major within their department. Students interested in departmental scholarships
should apply by Dec. 1 (EAI) for consideration.
These awards are need-blind and based on academic performance. See the Departmental Scholarships for First-Year Undergraduates section for more details.
ADVANCE COURSE REGISTRATION
Special registration days for Early Admission I and Early Admission II students guarantee early
selection of courses and instructors. Registration session placement is made on the basis of the date the enrollment deposit and enrollment forms are received. Several
registration programs are available March through July.
FRESHMAN LIVING-LEARNING CENTERS
The living-learning centers have two components: a small group of students
share a common classroom experience and live in the same unit of a residence
hall. In each of these centers, a faculty member in residence coordinates
study efforts and provides other academic and extra-curricular programming. This
unique program helps students develop study groups and promotes interaction
between students and faculty outside the classroom. The living-learning centers are reserved
for students who meet the EAI application deadline of Dec. 1.
HOUSING
Housing contracts are sent to all admitted students two to four weeks
following the admission decision. You will have the opportunity to list
your residence hall and floor preference.
Butler University offers scholarships in several academic areas for students intending to major within a specific department or college. These awards are collectively referred to as Departmental Scholarships and are available for students studying in the following colleges or academic areas:
Departmental Scholarships are renewable for the length of the student's academic program, providing that a 3.0 GPA is maintained and studies continue in the academic area of the award. These awards are need-blind and based solely on a student's academic performance in high school, not financial need.
Students may apply for only one Departmental Scholarship. These awards may be offered in addition to the Freshman Academic Scholarships.
ELIGIBILITY
All candidates for departmental awards must:

The Honors Program at Butler offers a multi-faceted approach to your education. Rather than viewing learning as something that occurs only in a classroom, we view it as an integral part of your entire life experience. Unique courses designed especially for honors students are complemented by a variety of non-traditional learning experiences. In addition, Honors students are members of the Honors Society, a student-run organization that plans social, academic and philanthropic events during the year and provides the opportunity to interact with like-minded students.
ADMISSION TO THE PROGRAM
To apply for the Honors Program, please indicate your interest on the Application for International Undergraduate Admission and Scholarships. We strongly encourage Honors candidates to submit a written essay on either choice B or C in the Personal Statement section of the application. Priority is given to students who are in the top 7% of their high school graduating class and earn a minimum SAT score of 1280 or a minimum ACT composite score of 29. The Honors Program will evaluate your leadership and extra-curricular activities, in addition to your high school curriculum, test scores and essay. Any student indicating an interest in the University Honors Program will receive consideration. Participation in the program is voluntary.
It is recommended that you submit your Application for International Undergraduate Admission and Scholarships by Feb. 1 in order to ensure consideration for the Honors Program.
ADVANTAGES TO THE HONORS PROGRAM
GENERAL INFORMATION
Academic Calendar
Butler University's academic calendar consists of two 16-week semesters
and two summer sessions. Semester I (Fall Semester) begins in late August
and ends in mid-December. Semester II (Spring Semester) begins in early
January and ends in May. Incoming international students are welcome
to apply for entry to either Semester I or II. It is not recommended
that students unfamiliar with the American education system begin their
studies in the summer.
Length of the Application Process
Admission decisions at Butler University are made on a rolling basis through the year with the exception of the professional phase of the Pharm. D. and PA programs.
Applications from international students must be received by July 1 for fall admission and by Nov. 1 for spring admission. Credentials for admission will not be reviewed until applications are complete, including financial documentation information. Students can expect to receive notification of admission by mail within four-to-six weeks of receipt of a complete application.
Structure of the American Education System
In the United States, most young people enter primary (elementary school)
at age six. After eight years, they attend secondary school (high school)
for four years. Students entering a university are generally 18 years old
and have completed a total of 12 years of schooling. International students
are expected to have a similar academic background. It is expected that
international students' secondary education program will have included
the study of their native language, English or another foreign language,
mathematics, natural and/or physical science, humanities and social sciences.
Determination of Academic Level
Butler University makes every effort to accurately evaluate the academic
work and degrees of all applicants. Degrees earned in other countries are
not always considered to be equivalent to those earned in the United States.
Advance credit may be granted for successful examination results in the
British GCE A-Levels, the International Baccalaureate (IB), the Canadian
CEGEP, the Advanced Placement program (AP) and the College Level Examination
Program (CLEP). Official test results must be submitted for consideration.
International students who have completed prior university coursework also may transfer credit. An application for admission must be submitted before prior academic work will be evaluated for advance or transfer credit. We recommend that all applicants provide course descriptions as well as an official transcript to facilitate the transfer process.

Financial Assistance
Butler University is pleased to offer financial assistance to academically
talented undergraduate students. Butler International Awards
take into consideration a student's academic merit and available financial
resources, and are available to non-immigrant applicants. U.S. citizens living abroad, U.S. permanent residents,
and dual U.S. citizens should apply for financial assistance
directly through the Butler University Office of Financial Aid.
International applicants who take the SAT or ACT examination and submit their application within
the deadlines set by EAI/EAII programs will receive consideration for Freshman
Academic and Departmental Scholarships.
Butler International Awards range from $2,000 to $11,000. There is great competition for the most generous awards and few students can expect to receive the full extent of financial assistance. For the academic year of 2000-2001, non-immigrant students are required to demonstrate a family and/or sponsor's contribution of $17,500 to be considered for an International Award. The awards are renewable for the length of the academic program as long as the recipient remains in good academic standing.
Because our resources are limited, when the difference between the family contribution and Butler financial aid is too great, Butler University may choose not to award any financial assistance. Therefore it is advantageous for students to document as must support as possible on the financial verification section of the application. Once all necessary documentation for admission has been received (including financial documentation), all non-immigrant freshmen and transfer students who apply for fall enrollment by May 1 automatically are considered for an International Award. Incomplete files will not be reviewed for admission or financial assistance. Awards are made on a rolling basis beginning in early January. All International Award offers are final.
Non-immigrant students majoring in Dance, Music, or Theatre are eligible for talent awards through an audition process.
