GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS
FOR APPLICANTS
THE APPLICATION
We look forward to evaluating your completed application to Butler
University. Please read these instructions carefully before you complete
your application.
You are responsible for presenting your accomplishments. Remember, you
are your own best advocate so please be specific and complete. Your application
and related materials will be read by several members of our Admission
Committee.
Submit the following items to apply for admission:

your personal statement (included in the on-line application)

official high school transcript showing coursework completed at least through
the junior year, and if you are currently in high school: a list of courses
in progress and the Secondary School Report from your guidance office.

1180) or official TOEFL scores for international students

a $25 non-refundable application fee (paid on-line upon submission of the
application)
- Admitted students must submit an official final high school transcript indicating their date of graduation.

Home-School Students: should submit an official copy of the academic
record indicating the grade point average; a summary of all courses taught
(curriculum list, bibliography), the title of each course completed, the
grade received and the name of the instructor (if different than the registered
home schooler); official transcripts received through a correspondence
school or a regional organization that provides this service (should list
courses completed, grades and the accreditation status of the school
organization).
Results of the Achievement Tests in English and mathematics, SAT II: Subject
Tests and an on-campus interview may be requested. Results of SAT II exams and an on-campus interview may be requested.
WHICH APPLICATION SHOULD YOU COMPLETE
Freshman - if you have less than 12 hours of college work completed.
Transfer - if you have more than 12 hours of college work completed.
International - if you are not a U.S. citizen or U.S. Permanent
Resident. Use the International application
or submit this application as a preliminary application.
APPLICATION OPTIONS
Butler offers two non-binding, early admissions
programs. These programs allow students to take advantage of certain benefits
by following established timelines. Completed applications for fall semester enrollment will be reviewed beginning Sept. 1. Decisions are made on a rolling basis. All applications must be received prior to Aug. 15 to be assured full consideration for fall admission.
The enrollment
deposit is refundable through May 1 for fall enrollment and through Dec.
1 for spring enrollment. Refund requests should be made in writing and
postmarked by the appropriate date.

EARLY ADMISSION
BENEFITS
DEPARTMENTAL SCHOLARSHIP
Many academic departments offer awards for students intending
to major within their department. Students interested in departmental scholarships
should apply by Dec. 1 (EAI) for consideration.
A separate application is required which will be mailed to EAI applicants beginning Nov. 15.
FRESHMAN ACADEMIC SCHOLARSHIPS
All students who submit a complete
application by Feb. 1 (EAI and EAII) will be considered for a freshman
academic scholarship, regardless of need. Awards are based on strong academic
and personal records accomplishment.
ADVANCE COURSE REGISTRATION
Special registration days for EAI and EAII students guarantee early
selection of courses and instructors. Registration sessions may be selected
made on the basis of the date the enrollment deposit and enrollment form
are received. Several registration sessions are available March through
July.
FRESHMAN LIVING-LEARNING CENTERS
The living-learning centers have two components: a small group of students
shares a common classroom experience and live in the same unit of a residence
hall. In each of these centers, a faculty member in residence coordinates
study efforts and provides other academic and extra-curricular programming. This
unique program helps students develop study groups and promotes interaction
between students and faculty outside the classroom. The living-learning centers are reserved
for students meet the EAI application deadline.
HOUSING
Housing contracts are sent to all admitted students two to four weeks
following the admission decision. You will have the opportunity to list
your residence hall, floor and roommate preference.
FINE ARTS APPLICANTS
All applicants indicating a major in dance, music or theatre
must complete the following:

Jordan College of Fine Arts (JCFA) dance, theatre, or music application

An audition in the primary major.
A dance, theatre, or music application, information on talent awards, and fall and spring audition dates will be mailed to all interested students
beginning in September.
Students must apply for admission before an audition can be scheduled.
FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE
Butler University offers a variety of programs to help you and your family
finance a Butler education. These programs may include scholarships, grants,
talent awards, educational loans and student employment. Other financing
options may be available through federal, state and institutional sources.
For consideration from all sources, Butler University encourages all
families to complete:

the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)

the Butler University Application for Financial Assistance (BUAP)
Priority consideration for all need-based gift assistance is given
to students who:
-
are admitted to Butler by March 1, and
-
file both the FAFSA and BUAP by March 1, and
-
complete their financial aid file by May 1.
After these dates eligibility for gift assistance is subject to the
availability
of funds.
The FAFSA is available from high school guidance offices. A complete
information packet on financial assistance will be sent to you after you
have applied for admission.
INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS
Standardized Tests
The SAT I or ACT is required for students:
-
from countries where English is the first language
-
who have completed a U.S.-style secondary/high school program in the U.S.
or overseas
-
Canadian students (except Quebec province)
-
students participating in NCAA athletics.
The following students are required to take the Test of English as a Foreign
Language (TOEFL) unless they are required to take the SAT or ACT as indicated:

All U.S. citizens educated outside the United States whose first language
is not English.

All non-U.S. citizens.
Financial Verification
Non-immigrant students must demonstrate proof
of sufficient finances. Without complete and official financial verification,
students cannot be considered for admission or financial assistance, and
visa documents cannot be issued.
DEPARTMENTAL SCHOLARSHIPS
Butler University offers scholarships in several academic areas for students intending to major within a specific
department or college. These awards are collectively referred to as Departmental Scholarships and are available
for students studying in the following colleges or academic areas:
- College of Business Administration
- College of Education
- College of Liberal Arts and Sciences
- Engineering Dual Degree Program
- Exploratory Studies Program
- Pre-law studies
- Pre-medical studies
Departmental Scholarships are renewable for the length of the student's academic program, providing that a 3.0
GPA is maintained and studies continue in the academic area of the award.
Students may apply for only one Departmental Scholarship. These awards may be offered in addition to the
Freshman Academic Scholarships.
ELIGIBILITY
All candidates for departmental scholarships must:
- be incoming full-time freshmen and
- apply for admission and scholarship by Dec. 1 and
- have earned a minimum SAT score of 1230 or ACT score of 27 or be ranked in the top 10 percent of their
graduating class.
PROCEDURE
- Submit a complete Application for Freshman Admission and Scholarships by Dec. 1.
- Submit two letters of references from teachers or school officials. Please ask references to comment on your
academic abilities and leadership potential, citing specific examples. References should provide their
recommendations to you in a sealed envelope, which you should send with your application.
- Submit a written personal statement. Students applying for Departmental Scholarships are strongly encouraged
to submit an essay using options B or C in the Personal Statement section of the application. Please indicate
your name, intended major and essay number in the upper right hand corner.
TIMELINE
Completed applications, including all scholarship components listed above, must be submitted to the Office of
Admission and postmarked by Dec. 1
Candidates selected for interviews will be notified on or before Feb. 1. Candidates will be invited to
campus to become acquainted with faculty and current students, and to participate in interviews with the selection
committee on one of the first two Saturdays in February. Some majors may require students to arrive on Friday and
stay overnight on campus. Scholarship recipients will be announced in early-to mid-March.
Students in Jordan College Fine Arts are eligible for talent awards based upon their audition. Contact
JCFA for more information regarding audition dates. Students planning to pursue a major in telecommunications arts
are eligible for scholarships in the telecommunication arts department. A scholarship application will be mailed
to all interested students. Scholarship opportunities for students in the College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences
become available to students entering the third year (professional phase) of the program.
HONORS PROGRAM
The Honors Program at Butler offers a multi-faceted approach to your education. Rather than viewing learning
as something that occurs only in a classroom, we view it as an integral part of your entire life experience.
Unique courses designed especially for honors students are complemented by a variety of non-traditional learning
experiences. In addition, honors students are members of the Honors Society, a student-run organization that
plans social, academic and philanthropic events during the year and provides the opportunity to interact with
like-minded students.
ADMISSION TO THE PROGRAM
To apply for the Honors Program, please indicate your interest on the Application for Freshman Admission and
Scholarships. We strongly encourage honors candidates to submit a written essay on either choice B or C in the
Personal Statement section of the application. Priority is given to students who are in the top 7 percent of
their high school graduating class and earn a minimum SAT score of 1280 or a minimum ACT composite score of
29. The Honors Program will evaluate your leadership and extra-curricular activities, in addition to your high
school curriculum, test scores and essay. Any student indicating an interest in the University Honors Program
will receive consideration. Participation in the program is voluntary.
It is recommended that you submit your Butler University Application for Freshman Admission and Scholarships by
Feb. 1 in order to ensure consideration for the Honors Program.
ADVANTAGES TO THE HONORS PROGRAM
- Participation in classes that bring together honors students from across the university
- Advising by a faculty member in your major who will provide encouragement and advocacy in completing the
Honors Program
- Acquisition of knowledge in a chosen field of study through a thesis project
- The opportunity to graduate with magna or summa cum laude, the top two honors extended by Butler University,
which are reserved solely for students who complete the Honors Program
