Statement of Admission Philosophy
One measure of a college's success is in its ability to meet the needs of its students. The Hiram College Admission Committee makes admission decisions accordingly.
Hiram's academic program best serves students who are prepared to respond to the challenges of a rigorous college curriculum. Therefore, the Admission Committee considers the applicant's previous academic record, including courses taken and grades received. Furthermore, it evaluates each applicant's energy motivation, potential, emotional maturity seriousness of purpose and attitude toward learning. Each application is reviewed carefully.
Hiram seeks students who are more than just academically prepared. The College prides itself on its strong sense of community and the diverse backgrounds and varied interests of its students. The Committee considers the ways in which each applicant will bring quality and vitality to the Hiram community. Such things as writing ability, recommendations, extracurricular activities, non-academic interests, and creativity all become part of the admission decision.
Hiram College is a member of the National Association of College Admission Counselors (NACAC) and endorses the Statement of Principles of Good Practice.
The Admission Calendar
Hiram admits transfer students for fall and spring semesters. Transfer students should make application for fall semester if possible, since this is the term when most new students enter the College. You should file your application as early as possible but not later than July 15 for fall semester and December 1 for spring semester. We will notify you by letter if any required portion of your application is missing. You will typically be notified of the Admission Committee's decision within one month of the date your application is complete. If you are admitted to Hiram and plan to enroll, you must make a $200 advance deposit. Deposits are not refundable, so you should be certain Hiram is your clear first choice before submitting your deposit.
College/University Transcripts
You are required to submit an official transcript of all college level work you have taken. Transcripts must be requested by you in writing from the registrar at each institution you
attended and mailed directly to us by that institution. They will be evaluated as part of the admission process, and if you are admitted to Hiram, you will be notified of your status with respect to transfer of credit when you receive your acceptance letter. In general, courses which are accepted for credit are those in which you have earned a grade of "C" or better and are comparable to courses offered at Hiram College. If you matriculate at Hiram, your college transcripts will become part of your official file and available for your review.
Transfer Status Waiver Form
You are also required to submit a Transfer Status Waiver Form completed by the Dean of Students at the institution you are presently attending or have most recently attended. He or she should complete and return this form to Hiram College at the
address listed at the top of the form. If you matriculate at Hiram, your Transfer Status Waiver Form will become part of your official file.
Admission Tests
If you have been out of high school fewer than two years, you are required to submit your scores on the SAT or the ACT. Generally these scores are recorded on your secondary school transcript. If your state required that you pass one or more proficiency tests in order to receive a high school diploma at the time you were graduated, your school will be asked to confirm that you have passed these tests.
Faculty Evaluation
After completing the top portion of the Faculty Evaluation, please give it to a faculty member who has taught you in a traditional academic subject in college. You should choose a faculty member who knows you well and is familiar with your ability to write and reason critically. If you wish to have an additional faculty member, coach, or club adviser recommend you, please ask him or her to write to us directly. If you matriculate at Hiram, your recommendations will not become part of your official file.
Essay
In order to understand better why you wish to transfer to Hiram, the Admission Committee asks that you write a brief essay explaining your interest in the College. This question is included on the on-line application.
Secondary School Report and Transcript
You must submit a Secondary School Report and high school transcript as part of your application for admission. Fill in the top portion of the Secondary School Report before giving it to your guidance or college counselor at the secondary school from which you were graduated. He or she should complete and return this report to Hiram College along with your secondary school transcript. If you matriculate at Hiram, your secondary school transcript will become part of your official file; your Secondary School Report will not.
Application Fee
A fee of $25 is paid online. Payment is made with either Mastercard or Visa. This fee is not refundable. If it represents a financial hardship to you and your family, you must ask the Dean of Students at the college/university you currently attend to submit a request for an application fee waiver on your behalf. He/she should explain briefly, but specifically, the need for the request.
Financial Aid
If you are applying for financial aid, you must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Students who make application to the College will be mailed a transfer student financial aid packet automatically, or you may request a packet from the Office of Student Financial Services (Box 67, Hiram, OH 44234). You must also request that each college/university you attended submit a financial aid transcript to our Office of Student Financial Services certifying the amount of financial aid you received (if any).
A final decision on your application for financial aid will be made after you have been admitted to the College and we receive the necessary financial documents. Because it generally takes from four to six weeks for this information to reach us after you file the forms, you should complete them as soon as possible. At Hiram, admission decisions are made without regard to family financial circumstances.
