Graduate Application Instructions and Requirements

To expedite the receipt and processing of your application, graduate applicants are strongly encouraged to follow the Graduate Application instructions provided below. Visit academics.adelphi.edu/derner-grad.php for details about specific programs. All application materials should be sent directly to: Adelphi University, Office of University Graduate Admissions, One South Avenue, P.O. Box 701, Garden City, NY 11530-0701. It is the applicant's responsibility to ensure that all materials are sent to and received by the Office of University Graduate Admissions. Feel free to contact the Office of University Graduate Admissions with any questions, for assistance, or to confirm program application requirements. Programs and program requirements are subject to change at the discretion of the University.

Please note: The Office of University Admissions, in consultation with the academic program, has the right to waive a requirement or request additional material.

Items 1-3 must be sent from the applicant directly to the Office of University Admissions:

  1. The completed Graduate Application for Admission. Include your signature and the date.
  2. Your completed typed essay. Be sure to attach the Graduate Essay Form to your typed essay. Refer to this form for essay questions.
  3. An application fee of $50. This fee is not refundable and is not credited on any subsequent bill. Checks or money orders should be made payable to Adelphi University. Adelphi alumni and U.S. veterans are not required to pay this fee.

Items 4-6 must be sent from the originating source or individual directly to the Office of University Graduate Admissions:

  1. Standardized test scores.It is the applicant's responsibility to request that official copies of test score reports be forwarded directly to the Office of University Admissions. The Educational Testing Service code for Adelphi University is 2003. Scores must be from exams taken within the last five years. The following graduate programs in the Derner Institute require submission of the GRE General and Psychology exams:
    • Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology
    • Respecialization in Clinical Psychology
    • M.A. in Mental Health Counseling
  2. Official transcripts from all colleges and universities previously attended. Failure to provide official transcripts from all schools previously attended will delay processing of your application. If you previously attended Adelphi University, your Adelphi University transcript can be obtained by the Office of University Graduate Admissions.
  3. Letters of reference. Provide your references with the Applicant's Letter of Reference Form. The following graduate programs in the Derner Institute require three letters of recommendation:
    • Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology
    • Respecialization in Clinical Psychology (Advanced Certificate)
    • M.A. in School Psychology
    The following graduate programs in the Derner Institute require two letters of reference:
    • M.A. in Mental Health Counseling
    • M.A. in General Psychology

Priority Application Dates

  • Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology: January 15 (fall admission only)
  • Respecialization in Clinical Psychology (Advanced Certificate): January 15 (fall admission only)
  • M.A. in School Psychology: March 1 (fall admission only)
    • M.A. in Mental Health Counseling: March 1 priority deadline; April 1 regular admission (fall admission only)
  • M.A. in General Psychology: Rolling admission
